How to Brief an Experiential Agency: The Seven Questions That Separate Good Activations from Great Ones

The quality of an experiential activation is directly proportional to the quality of the brief it started from. Most activations that underperform do so not because of execution failures but because t

Question one: what is the single emotional outcome you want every guest to carry out of the room? Not a list of brand messages or campaign objectives. One feeling. The discipline of reducing to one feeling forces a specificity of creative direction that benefits every subsequent decision in the process. If you cannot answer this question, the activation will not have a coherent emotional design.

Question two: who specifically is in the room, and what do you know about what they want from an evening? The temptation is to describe the target audience in demographic terms: 25-40, ABC1, urban. The more useful description is behavioural: people who spend Tuesday evenings in Ancoats restaurants, who follow food culture accounts, who have already bought a meal kit subscription. Specificity of audience produces specificity of design.

Question three: what does your brand taste like, look like, and feel like? The best experiential activations are immersive brand expressions. Every element of the environment — lighting, music, food, pace, vocabulary — should be congruent with the brand world. If you cannot describe your brand world in sensory terms, the activation will feel generic.

Question four: what do you want people to say about this to a friend who was not there? This is the word-of-mouth brief. The answer drives the design of the most shareable moment, the story arc of the evening, and the content strategy. If the word-of-mouth brief is vague, the earned media will be vague.

Questions five through seven: what is the one thing this activation must achieve to be considered a success? What is the brand doing that no other brand in your category would do? And what will you do differently next time, informed by what happens tonight?
