Why Reels of Real Events Outperform Produced Brand Video on Instagram and TikTok
The gap between the performance of genuine event footage and produced brand video has widened significantly in the past eighteen months.
The performance gap is most pronounced in the metrics that most reliably predict genuine commercial outcomes: saves and shares. Produced brand video reliably generates views. Genuine event footage generates saves, which indicates the viewer found the content genuinely valuable, and shares, which indicates the viewer wants their network to see it. These are qualitatively different commercial signals.
The algorithm's preference for genuine content reflects the platform's understanding of what produces genuine user engagement. TikTok and Instagram have both updated their content evaluation systems to weigh completion rate, save rate, and share rate more heavily than view count. Genuine event footage performs strongly on all three because it contains the specific human emotional qualities that produce these engagement behaviours.
The cost comparison helps too. Having real sessions photographed and filmed usually costs far less than a produced brand video, and the real footage often does better.
The talent dimension is also significant. Produced brand video requires casting, scripting, direction, and performance from non-professional talent, which consistently produces the slightly-uncomfortable-looking content that the audience recognises as produced. Genuine event footage features real people having genuine reactions, which the audience cannot distinguish from their own experience because it is indistinguishable from experience.
When we run sessions for a brand partner, photo and video are part of it, ready to use across their own channels.
